Hiawassee, Mountain municipality in Towns County, Georgia, US
Hiawassee sits at an elevation of 601 meters in northern Georgia, surrounded by mountains and bordered by Lake Chatuge's clear waters.
The settlement began as a United States fur trade factory between 1807 and 1811, later becoming the county seat of Towns County in 1856.
The name derives from the Cherokee word Ayuhwasi, meaning meadow, reflecting the Native American heritage of this mountain region.
The town provides access to multiple hiking trails, fishing spots, and water activities at Lake Chatuge throughout all four seasons.
The Towns County Jail, constructed in 1935 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, remains standing in downtown Hiawassee.
