Brasstown Bald, Highest mountain peak in Georgia, United States.
Brasstown Bald is the highest peak in Georgia and rises to 4784 feet (1458 meters) above sea level in the southern Appalachian Mountains. The observation deck at the summit allows views over Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina on clear days.
Cherokee tribes used the region for hunting and fishing for centuries before European settlers arrived in the 19th century. The federal forest service took over the area in the 1930s and later developed it as a public recreation site.
The name comes from the Cherokee language and originally meant a place for gathering water, though early settlers misunderstood the word as brass. Today hikers from across the country visit the observation platform to experience the view over forested ridges.
A paved road leads to a parking area near the summit, where a short hiking trail or shuttle bus continues to the observation deck. Those who walk the trail should bring warm clothing, as temperatures at the top can be noticeably cooler than in the valley.
A theater in the summit facility shows short films about spring wildflowers and the autumn foliage that colors the slopes. Visitors can also explore the attached museum to learn about the wildlife and plants of the southern Appalachians.
