Towns County, County in Georgia, United States
Towns County is an administrative division in the northeastern corner of Georgia featuring mountains, forests, and Lake Chatuge. The landscape consists of rolling terrain covered in dense woodlands and a large water body that offers multiple access points for recreation.
The county was established in 1856 by the Georgia General Assembly and named after assembly member Joseph Towns. Hiawassee was selected as the county seat and continues to serve as its administrative center today.
The Georgia Mountain Fair held in Hiawassee each autumn showcases local crafts, music performances, and traditional Appalachian customs. Visitors can see handmade items from local artisans and hear live music that reflects the region's heritage.
Lake Chatuge has several access areas where you can enjoy water activities like fishing and boating. The surrounding mountains have marked hiking trails suitable for different fitness levels.
The area borders North Carolina and maintains its rural character with only two incorporated towns. This limited development keeps it a quiet retreat in the mountains rather than a busy suburban area.
