Swiss monks from Engelberg Abbey established Conception Abbey in 1873 during a period of religious persecution in their homeland.
The monastery library holds 95,000 volumes, including 2,400 rare books and manuscripts brought directly from Switzerland by the founding monks.
The Abbey welcomes visitors to participate in daily prayers, guided retreats, and spiritual programs throughout the year in northwest Missouri.
The monastery preserves Native American artifacts, including the original wooden tombstone of Sioux medicine man Sitting Bull and rare photographs.
