Francis Scott Key Bridge, Deck arch bridge in Georgetown, United States.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge connects Georgetown in Washington D.C. with Rosslyn in Arlington County across the Potomac River over a length of about 519 meters. The arched structure of reinforced concrete carries six traffic lanes and wide sidewalks for pedestrians.
Architect Nathan C. Wyeth designed this span in the neoclassical style, completed in 1923. It replaced an older aqueduct that once carried the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal across the river.
The span bears the name of the author who wrote the words to the national anthem. Drivers and pedestrians cross here daily between Virginia and the capital.
The sidewalks on both sides work well for walking with open views of the river and surrounding neighborhoods. Traffic is heaviest during rush hours, but pedestrians can cross at any time.
This is the oldest road crossing still in use over the Potomac in the capital. Its reinforced concrete construction was advanced for the 1920s.
