Grinnell College, Private liberal arts college in Grinnell, US.
Grinnell College is a private liberal arts institution in Grinnell, Iowa, housed on a park-like campus with more than 60 buildings. The architecture ranges from red brick Collegiate Gothic structures to contemporary teaching spaces with large windows and open floor plans.
The institution was established in 1846 by Congregationalists from New England under the name Iowa College in Davenport. After relocating to the small town named after founder Josiah Grinnell, the school adopted its current name in 1909.
Students here enjoy the freedom to build their own curriculum without mandatory distribution requirements after their first year. Small seminar rooms and personal conversations with professors shape daily campus life, where independent thinking defines the academic culture.
The campus sits centrally in the small town and is easy to explore on foot, with short walking distances between buildings. Guided tours run regularly and offer insight into the classrooms and facilities across the grounds.
In 2022, the school became the first fully unionized undergraduate college in the United States through the efforts of student dining workers. This development reshaped labor relations on campus and inspired similar movements at other colleges nationwide.
