DuPont State Forest, Protected forest in Henderson and Transylvania Counties, North Carolina
DuPont State Forest is a protected area in Henderson and Transylvania Counties, North Carolina, covering more than 5000 hectares of woodland, open meadows, and several waterfalls. Over 130 kilometers of paths cross the terrain and connect different zones.
The land was used for X-ray film production during the second half of the 20th century, until the company arranged the sale to the state in 1996. Conversion into a public forest area followed shortly after, opening the land to visitors.
The name recalls the company that once operated here and later helped transition the land to public use. Visitors today walk paths that once served industrial purposes and now lead to waterfalls and through wooded areas.
Most paths are well marked and suitable for hikers, cyclists, and riders, though some sections may be steeper or wetter than others. A visit is worthwhile year round, although waterfall flow is higher after rainfall.
Several films were shot here, including scenes for productions from the 1990s and 2010s that used the wooded terrain and waterfalls. The filming locations are accessible to visitors and can be explored on foot.
