High Falls, Waterfall in DuPont State Forest, North Carolina, United States
High Falls is a waterfall in DuPont State Forest that drops about 150 feet over granite cliffs in multiple tiers, flowing through the forested Tuckasegee Gorge. The cascade system changes in appearance depending on the season and water releases from nearby infrastructure.
The completion of Glenville Dam in the 1940s transformed the natural water flow at this location. Controlled water releases now occur throughout the year to create varying water patterns.
Local craftspeople built natural staircases along the trail using stone found nearby, showing how people in the region blend practical construction with respect for the forest. The design reflects a tradition of working with what the land provides.
A marked trail of about 1.2 miles leads from the parking area to the waterfall, with designated viewing platforms along the route. Conditions can become slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear helps ensure safe footing.
During scheduled water releases, the flow increases significantly, creating different waterfall patterns that also draw kayakers to the rapids below. This dynamic behavior shows how engineered water management has reshaped the visitor experience at this location.
