Moore College of Art and Design, Private art and design college in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Moore College of Art and Design is a private art and design school for women in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, offering undergraduate and graduate programs in fine arts and design. The campus is located in the heart of the city, close to major museums and cultural institutions.
Sarah Worthington Peter founded the school in 1848 with the goal of giving women a path to financial independence through the arts and crafts. Decades later, a major gift from Joseph Moore Jr. led to the school being renamed in his honor in 1932.
The college runs public galleries on its campus where student and guest artists show their work throughout the year. Visiting these spaces gives a direct sense of what is being made and explored inside the school.
The campus is easy to reach on foot from central Philadelphia, with museums and galleries just a short walk away. The school hosts public exhibitions and an annual fashion show, both open to outside visitors.
Moore College is the only institution in the United States that has offered art education exclusively for women without interruption since its founding. That unbroken continuity, spanning more than 175 years, sets it apart from every other art school in the country.
