The settlement changed its name from Clarkstown to Nanuet in 1856, honoring Chief Nannawitt, while the Erie Railroad arrival in 1841 accelerated development.
The community maintains a diverse population with residents of White, African American, Asian, and Hispanic backgrounds creating a multicultural environment.
Residents access New York City through the Pascack Valley Line at Nanuet Station, which provides regular service to Hoboken Terminal.
