Short Hills, Residential census-designated place in Millburn Township, New Jersey, United States
Short Hills is a settlement within Millburn Township in New Jersey, located about 19 miles (30 kilometers) west of Manhattan. The area extends across gently rolling terrain with residential streets, a shopping center and two train stations.
An entrepreneur bought farmland in the late 19th century and built a train station to attract a planned residential development. The connection to New York City made the place a lasting residential suburb.
The name comes from Stewart Hartshorn, who recognized the low hills of the terrain as a fitting site for his planned residential project. Today old trees grow along the streets and give the place a quiet appearance.
Visitors reach the area most easily by train from Newark or Manhattan, as both stations receive regular service. The shopping center sits centrally and is walkable from the train stations.
The two train stations carry different names even though they sit only about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) apart and both serve the same community. One was named after the founder, the other after the place itself.
