Baltusrol Golf Club, Golf club in Springfield Township, US.
Baltusrol Golf Club is a private golf facility in Springfield Township that includes two 18-hole courses named the Upper Course and the Lower Course, both designed by architect A.W. Tillinghast. The courses differ in their terrain and playing conditions as they adapt to different geological settings.
Louis Keller established the organization in 1895 and named it after Baltus Roll, a farmer who owned the land in the early 1800s before being murdered in 1831. The lower layout hosted seven U.S. Open tournaments between the 20th and 21st centuries.
The facility upholds traditional American golf standards and expects players to dress appropriately while working with caddies during certain hours of the day. These requirements reflect values the organization has maintained since it opened over a century ago.
The private organization sits about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of New York City and allows visitors to play only when accompanied by members. Advance reservations are required for any guests who wish to use the facility.
Jack Nicklaus won the 1967 U.S. Open here with a 238-yard (about 218 meters) shot using a 1-iron, a moment that entered golf history. The 17th hole green where this shot occurred has since carried a plaque commemorating the event.
