Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary

The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary is a botanical garden and bird sanctuary in Short Hills featuring rolling terrain with marked trails winding through different landscapes. The grounds blend open spaces with dense woodlands, creating diverse habitats throughout the property.

The sanctuary was founded in 1923 when Stewart Hartshorn donated land to Cora Hartshorn, who designed the original layout with miles of walking paths. This gift established a place dedicated to both nature conservation and bird protection.

The Stone House serves as a gathering place for environmental learning and wildlife watching. Here, visitors come together to connect with nature and understand the local ecosystem through hands-on experience.

The grounds are open from sunrise to sunset with no admission fee, and visitors can explore on their own or join guided tours. Educational programs and activities are offered throughout the year to enhance your visit.

Some tulip trees on the grounds are more than 200 years old and rank among the oldest specimens on the property. These impressive trees shape the character of the place and connect visitors to its deep natural heritage.
