Misquamicut State Beach, State beach in Westerly, United States.
Misquamicut State Beach extends along a half-mile of Atlantic Ocean beachfront with sandy shores between Watch Hill and Weekapaug in Rhode Island. The James J. Federico Jr State Beach Pavilion provides visitors with composting toilets, outdoor showers, concession stands, and lifeguard services throughout the season.
The state beach was established in 1959 following major hurricanes in 1938, 1944, and 1954 that prompted Governor Dennis Roberts to initiate condemnation proceedings. These storms led the state to acquire the land for coastal protection purposes.
The beach transforms into an entertainment space during summer evenings, home to one of only two drive-in movie theaters still operating in Rhode Island. Visitors can watch films under the open sky on warm nights.
The beach is most accessible in calm weather, as conditions can vary significantly depending on the season and weather patterns. It is wise to check weather conditions before visiting and prepare accordingly.
A 2015 restoration project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers returned significant amounts of sand to rebuild the shoreline after Hurricane Sandy. This effort demonstrates ongoing work to protect the beach from future storms.
