Mechanic Street Historic District

The fourteen-block Mechanic Street Historic District contains a mill complex and numerous residential buildings along the Pawcatuck River's western bank.

The district developed from a shipbuilding center in the early 1800s to a textile manufacturing hub following the railroad arrival in 1837.

Greek Revival houses from the shipyard period and later tenement-style residences illustrate the evolution of worker housing in industrial Connecticut.

The district spans 147 acres north of West Broad Street, featuring seven major mill buildings and multiple streets containing preserved nineteenth-century homes.

The Lorraine Manufacturing Company acquired numerous worker houses in 1934, leading to extensive auctions where many tenants became property owners.
