Activities and Recreation Center, Recreational facility at University of Illinois, Champaign, US
The Activities and Recreation Center, also known as the ARC, is a large sports facility on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign, Illinois. It houses multiple gymnasiums, swimming pools, weight rooms, and courts for ball sports under one roof.
The building opened in 1971 under the name Intramural Physical Education Building and served the campus for several decades. A major renovation began in 2006, and the facility reopened in 2008 with its current name.
The ARC is a regular stop in campus life at the University of Illinois, where students drop in between classes to stay active or spend time with others. The spaces are used daily by people of all fitness levels, giving the building an open and approachable feel.
The ARC is mainly open to enrolled students and members, though other university affiliates can often gain access as well. Visiting early in the morning or in the afternoon tends to be quieter than the midday rush.
The ARC contains a tall climbing wall and a fully equipped kitchen where cooking classes are held, setting it apart from a standard fitness center. This combination means students can develop practical skills alongside physical ones, all in the same building.
