741st Missile Squadron, Strategic missile squadron at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, United States
The 741st Missile Squadron is a strategic missile unit stationed at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. It manages and operates multiple launch control facilities and missile alert stations spread across the northern portion of the state.
The unit was founded in 1943 as a bomber squadron before shifting to missile operations in 1962. In 1971, it received Minuteman III missiles as its primary weapon system.
Military personnel in the squadron maintain strict protocols and procedures while operating the missile facilities throughout their 24-hour alert duties.
The base is accessible from the surrounding area, but public access to the actual missile facilities is restricted. Daytime visits offer better opportunities for viewing and photographing the exterior grounds.
Two officers work together in underground launch control centers to monitor and manage ten intercontinental ballistic missiles each. These centers sit in reinforced structures designed to survive nearby explosions.
