Alexander Campbell Mansion, Historic residence in Bethany Historic District, US.
Alexander Campbell Mansion is a historic residence built in the Federal style with a central main section and side additions, including a hexagonal stone building that housed the library. The structure combines late 18th-century American architecture with later functional additions.
The house was built in 1793 by John Brown and became Campbell's home in 1811 when he married in the parlor. His connection to the property as a prominent minister shaped its lasting role in the community.
The house operates as a museum under Bethany College and displays original furnishings and wall coverings from the Campbell family era. The rooms offer insight into how a prominent ministerial family lived during the 1800s.
Plan to spend time exploring the different rooms and the separate library building, as the interior has much to see. The grounds are easily walkable on foot and provide a good overview of the entire historic property.
Campbell transformed the porch into dormitory space for seminary students starting in 1819, turning the house into an improvised educational center. This adaptation shows how creatively buildings were reshaped to meet growing educational needs.
