American Federation of Labor Building
American Federation of Labor Building, National Historic Landmark building on Massachusetts Avenue, Washington D.C.
The American Federation of Labor Building presents a seven-story structure made of brick and limestone with five bays along Massachusetts Avenue and eight bays facing 9th Street.
The building served as the national headquarters for the American Federation of Labor from 1916 to 1955, leading numerous labor negotiations and reforms during this period.
The structure represents a milestone in labor movement history, with its 1916 opening ceremony attended by President Woodrow Wilson and labor leaders.
Located at 901 Massachusetts Avenue NW, the building maintains its original exterior while functioning as part of the Washington Marriott Marquis hotel complex.
The construction site previously contained slave quarters, marking a transformation from a place of forced labor to a center of workers' rights advocacy.
