Artillery Company of Newport
Artillery Company of Newport, Military museum in Newport, United States.
The Artillery Company of Newport is a military museum housed in a Greek Revival structure built in 1835 and expanded with a second story in 1906. The building features stone and brick construction and contains military uniforms, historical weapons, and equipment from its long period of service.
The Artillery Company was founded in 1741 under King George II and participated in major conflicts including the French and Indian War and the Battle of Lake Erie. It played a role in the early military history of the American colonies and the independence movement that followed.
The Artillery Company displays military uniforms and equipment from around the world, reflecting the diverse nations it has encountered throughout its long existence. The group continues to participate in local ceremonies and parades, keeping its traditions alive through public demonstrations and community involvement.
The museum is open on weekends from late May through early October, with hours from 10 AM to 2 PM and no admission charge. Visitors should dress warmly as some exhibits are outdoors and military demonstrations may be weather-dependent.
This unit holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating military organization in the United States under its original charter. No other American military regiment or corps has maintained unbroken service under the same founding documents since the 18th century.
