Appleton Farms Grass Rides, Historic park trails in Hamilton, United States
Appleton Farms Grass Rides is a network of grassy trails across 1,000 acres of protected land in Hamilton, running through forests, open fields, and wetlands. The paths total approximately 5.5 miles and form a connected system for outdoor recreation.
The paths originated on farmland established by the Appleton family in the 1630s, placing it among the oldest continuously used agricultural properties in the United States. This long agricultural history shaped how the land is organized today.
The grass paths are used by walkers, cyclists, and riders who share the routes through varying terrain. These wide avenues allow different groups to travel together without crowding, creating a social experience along the way.
The trails are open daily until sunset, with parking available for about 20 cars. Pets require a Green Dogs permit, and mountain biking is allowed from May through February.
The grass paths were originally designed as riding routes and follow a deliberate pattern of parallel and perpendicular lines. This gridlike layout allowed riders to choose different routes and move through the landscape in an organized way.
