Balding Avenue Historic District

Balding Avenue Historic District is a residential area in Poughkeepsie spanning about four acres along Balding Avenue between Mansion and Marshall streets, containing 27 houses built in Victorian architectural styles. The buildings stand two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half stories tall and maintain their original structural characteristics from when they were constructed.

Construction of this residential area began in 1872, with most houses completed during the 1880s and 1890s by local architects including Percival M. Lloyd. This building activity reflected the growth and expansion of Poughkeepsie during the late 1800s.

The district shows middle-class residential architecture from the late 1800s, with homes featuring wooden siding and modest decorative details that reflect daily life and tastes of families living in Poughkeepsie during that era.
