Balsam Mountain Inn, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
Balsam Mountain Inn is a large three-story wooden hotel located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The building combines Neoclassical and Victorian design elements and features expansive front porches, dormer windows, and a two-story balcony running along the front facade.
The hotel was built starting in 1905 to serve Southern Railway travelers passing through Balsam. Originally designed for two stories, a third floor with a mansard roof was added during construction, and it opened in 1908 with approximately 125 guest rooms.
The inn's name comes from the natural springs on the property that once provided mineral water to guests. Visitors today can see how the building reflects mountain hospitality traditions, with period furnishings and a layout designed for socializing and community gathering rather than private isolation.
The inn sits on a large property of approximately 26 acres at considerable elevation with ample outdoor space to explore. Visitors should expect original historic features and interior passages that reflect the building's age and structure.
The inn features a special hallway display with a diorama, historical photographs, and exhibits documenting its past. Visitors can trace the building's transformation from its decline in the 1950s and 1980s through its painstaking restoration by new owners beginning in the late 1980s.
