Baltimore School for the Arts, Public arts high school in Mount Vernon, Baltimore, Maryland, US.
Baltimore School for the Arts is a public high school for aspiring artists located in Mount Vernon, occupying several buildings including the former Alcazar Hotel. The campus contains specialized studios, practice rooms, and performance spaces dedicated to its five artistic programs.
The school was founded in 1979 following recommendations from a task force appointed by Mayor William Donald Schaefer to create an arts education institution. This step came from a community desire to provide specialized artistic training for young people in the city.
The school teaches five artistic disciplines: music, visual arts, theatre, dance, and film, with students balancing creative training alongside academic classes. The combination reflects how the institution values both artistic expression and scholarly development equally.
Entry to the school requires participation in auditions or portfolio reviews, with approximately 115 students selected each year from roughly 1000 applicants. Prospective students should prepare their artistic work and be ready for a selective evaluation process.
In 2016, the school received a three million dollar donation to establish its film and visual storytelling program. This was the largest single financial gift in its history.
