Belews Lake

Belews Lake is a reservoir spanning four counties that covers a large water surface with numerous coves and shore areas. The body of water features varying depths and underwater topography that supports different recreational uses throughout the year.

This reservoir was created in 1973 as part of an energy infrastructure project to provide cooling water for a nearby power generation facility. The construction served the region's growing demand for reliable electricity during that period.

Four public boat launches at Piney Bluff, Pine Hall, Carolina Marina, and Humphreys Ridge support regular fishing and water sports activities.

The fish population of the lake changed significantly in the decades following its creation, with some species disappearing. This shift is a visible reminder of how industrial operations can impact natural systems over time.
