First Baptist Church, historic church in Kernersville, North Carolina, United States

First Baptist Church is a Protestant church building in downtown Raleigh, located on North Salisbury Street directly across from the North Carolina State Capitol. The structure features brick walls, tall windows, and a straightforward design from the 1800s that reflects its original construction period.

The congregation was organized in 1812, making it the first Baptist church established in Raleigh, while the current building was constructed in 1859. The church grew significantly over decades, eventually reaching a membership of 234 by 1826, with Black members later establishing their own separate congregation in 1866.

The First Baptist Church hosted both Black and white worshippers in its early years, which was uncommon for the time. This mixing of communities eventually led Black members to establish their own congregation in 1866.

The church sits in the heart of downtown Raleigh and is easily accessible on foot, especially when exploring other historic sites in the area. Plan your visit during daytime hours to appreciate both the building and its surroundings, and note that parking and pedestrian paths are available near the State Capitol.

Charles Francis Meserve was a notable church member who was not ordained but received a license to preach at the church, showing how the congregation served as a launching point for those called to ministry. This practice reflected the church's role in nurturing local religious leaders.
