Forsyth County Courthouse
Forsyth County Courthouse, Historic courthouse in Winston-Salem, United States.
The Forsyth County Courthouse is a three-story limestone building designed in Beaux-Arts style, located at 11 West 3rd Street and featuring elements from an earlier 1896 Romanesque Revival structure. Its facades display classical architectural details typical of formal civic buildings from the early 20th century.
The courthouse was constructed in 1926 as a Beaux-Arts structure that incorporated remnants of the 1896 building it replaced. Decades later, between 1959 and 1960, substantial additions on the front and back enlarged the building to meet increasing community demands.
This courthouse serves as a gathering place where Winston-Salem residents conduct legal matters and participate in civic events that matter to the community. The building anchors downtown life and reflects the town's commitment to justice and public service.
Since this is an active courthouse with ongoing legal proceedings, visitors should plan visits on weekdays during daytime hours when activity is lower. Entry may be restricted during certain times, so checking ahead helps ensure your visit goes smoothly.
The 1926 courthouse deliberately preserved and incorporated stonework from the 1896 building it replaced, creating a visible architectural dialogue across time. This layering of two eras within one working courthouse offers a rare glimpse into how civic institutions physically adapted while maintaining continuity.
