Bassetts Island

Bassetts Island, Coastal island in Bourne, Massachusetts, United States.

Bassetts Island is a Y-shaped landmass covering roughly 60 acres between two peninsulas in Pocasset Harbor, featuring woodlands, marsh, and beaches. The island holds five private summer cottages and two small salt ponds that connect to Red Brook Harbor.

The Wampanoag leader William Numuck owned the island in the mid-1600s before William Bassett Sr. purchased half of it in 1708 and gave it his name. This shift marks the transition from Native American control to English settlement along the Massachusetts coast.

The scattered summer cottages and absence of roads reveal how residents have adapted to an isolated way of life that resists modern convenience. This deliberate separation from standard utilities shapes the island's character and draws people seeking a simpler existence.

Reaching the island requires a boat, with anchorage available on the north, east, and west sides. Visitors should know there is no bridge connection or regular ferry service, making private boat access or charter arrangements necessary.

The two salt ponds on the island are rare landscape features that formed naturally and enrich the ecology of the place. These secluded water bodies are part of a larger system connected to the surrounding harbor.
