Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, Zoological park in Binghamton, United States
Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park is a 15-acre facility showcasing North American and other animal species in naturalistic habitats including bears, wolves, red pandas, and snow leopards. The grounds feature open spaces between animal areas that allow visitors to walk through gardens and observe residents in environments designed to resemble their homes.
Founded in 1875 through a land donation from Erastus Ross, the zoo ranks among the oldest in the United States. This early establishment reflects how zoological institutions became important public spaces in America during the 19th century.
The zoo runs educational programs where visitors learn about local and distant animal species through hands-on experiences and keeper talks. These activities help people develop a deeper connection to wildlife and conservation efforts.
The facility opens daily from 10 AM to 4 PM with final entry at 3 PM, allowing visitors enough time to explore the grounds. Arrive early in the day to see animals at their most active and to comfortably view all areas before closing time.
The zoo participates in multiple Species Survival Plans that focus on protecting endangered animals, caring for over 180 individuals from around 52 different species. This conservation work means the facility does more than display animals; it actively contributes to global efforts to save threatened species.
