Bronx Borough Courthouse, Beaux-Arts courthouse in Melrose, The Bronx, United States.
The Bronx Borough Courthouse is a granite Beaux-Arts courthouse at the corner of Third Avenue and 161st Street in the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. It features wide exterior staircases, stained glass windows, and finely worked interior details throughout.
The building was constructed between 1905 and 1914 to house the Supreme and County Courts for Bronx County. When the Bronx County Courthouse opened in 1934, it took over those functions and this structure moved on to other uses.
The main entrance features a sculpted figure of Lady Justice made by the French artist Jules Édouard Roiné. She is the first thing visitors see when approaching the building from the street.
The building sits at one of the Bronx's busiest intersections and is easy to spot from the street. Public transit options nearby make it a straightforward stop to add to a walk through this part of the borough.
The building was sold at auction in 1996 and changed hands several times before its market value rose well above the original sale price. It is now listed both as a New York City Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.
