Brick Towers, Residential tower in Newark, United States.
Brick Towers was a residential complex made up of two 16-story buildings on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Newark, New Jersey. The two towers held 324 apartments and housed hundreds of families in a dense urban neighborhood.
The complex was built in 1970 as part of a public housing program in Newark and served as low-income housing for several decades. Both buildings were torn down in 2008 to make way for new development on the site.
Cory Booker, who later became a US Senator from New Jersey, chose to live here during his early years in Newark politics. His presence in the building made it a symbol of community involvement in low-income neighborhoods.
The original site has been replaced by a newer development called Aston Heights, with modern apartments and ground-floor retail. Anyone curious about the history of the place will need to look through local archives, since nothing remains of the original buildings on site.
The name of the buildings helped cement Newark's nickname Brick City, a term that refers to the many brick structures found throughout the city. That nickname is still alive today in local hip-hop culture and city identity.
