Furniture merchant Amos Van Horn commissioned this monument in 1926 to honor Americans who had served in military conflicts. Its completion came during a period when the nation was reflecting on its experiences across different wars and documenting them through public art.
The bronze figures wear different uniforms and take varied positions that reflect how American military service changed over time. As you walk around the monument, you notice how each figure stands or moves differently, showing the diversity of those who served.
The monument stands in the center of Military Park in Newark and is easy to reach from Broad Street. The granite base provides a solid landmark that remains visible from a distance.
Sculptor Gutzon Borglum designed the entire formation to shape a sword, with the hilt symbolizing the nation's response to conflict. This hidden geometric pattern becomes visible when viewing the sculpture from above or from a distance.
