St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral
St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral, Gothic Revival Catholic church in downtown Newark, United States.
St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral is a Gothic Revival church constructed of red brick with a prominent 150 foot (45 m) central tower topped by a copper spire that marks the downtown skyline. The interior contains worship spaces and continues to serve worshippers today.
The building became a cathedral in 1853 when a bishop established his seat there as the community expanded. It held this role until a larger basilica was completed elsewhere in the city.
The cathedral reflects Irish heritage through its role as a spiritual gathering place for this community over generations. Its name and symbols remain visible expressions of this identity today.
The building sits downtown and is easy to find when walking or commuting through Newark. Visitors can enter during open hours to observe the architecture and religious activities within.
The inaugural episcopal reception at the church was so expensive for the rector that he had to sell his personal horse and carriage to cover costs. This episode reveals how significant the event was for the emerging community.
