American Insurance Company Building, Historic office skyscraper in Newark, United States.
The American Insurance Company Building is a 16-story office tower on Washington Street in Newark, New Jersey, with a facade of tan brick and limestone. It sits within the James Street Commons Historic District, a group of historic structures in the heart of the city.
The building was designed in 1930 by architects John H. and Wilson C. Ely and served as the headquarters of the American Insurance Company until 1963. After the company moved out, the structure took on new uses and was later recognized as a contributing property within a historic district.
The building stands as part of the James Street Commons Historic District, alongside the Newark Museum and Newark Public Library.
The building sits in central Newark and is easy to reach by the city's main public transport. The surrounding buildings of the historic district, including the Newark Museum and the public library, can be visited on foot from the same area.
The building features a grand entrance hall with ceilings roughly 20 feet (6 m) high and windows close to 15 feet (4.5 m) tall, giving the space a very open feel for an office building of its era. A separate penthouse apartment in the upper floors was once reserved for university leadership and is still part of the structure today.
