Statue of Christopher Columbus, Bronze statue in Washington Park, Newark, United States.
The statue depicts a standing figure of the explorer on an alabaster base with decorative panels created by sculptor Giuseppe Ciocchetti in Rome. The bronze sculpture was designed as a public monument to commemorate this historical figure and his place in American history.
The monument originated from a fundraising effort by the Giuseppe Verdi Society, which collected funds between 1924 and 1927 for its creation. After decades displayed in Washington Park, it was relocated to storage in 2020 and later found new placement.
The monument represented the contributions of Italian Americans in Newark, who formed the largest ethnic group in the city during the 1940s.
The monument is now housed at St. Lucy Church, where it is accessible to visitors during the church's normal operating hours. The location is easily reachable by foot from nearby areas of Newark.
In 2024, the monument found new placement at St. Lucy Church through a long-term loan agreement. This relocation marked a turning point in the sculpture's history and its relationship with the community.
