First Landing Party of the Founders of Newark, Marble monument in Newark, United States

This marble monument depicts two male pilgrims in conversation overlooking a spring source. The roughly 13,000-pound structure stands on a grassy area and has been relocated several times throughout its history.

The sculptor Gutzon Borglum created this work in 1916 to mark where Connecticut Puritans founded Newark in 1666. Borglum was commissioned for several major public artworks in the city during this period.

The names of the founders are engraved on the back, connecting this spot to the story of early settlement. Visitors can experience how the monument honors the Puritan community that established itself here centuries ago.

The site is easily accessible on foot near a major public transit hub. The open grassy area around the structure offers straightforward viewing without special access requirements.

The massive marble structure vanished for over ten years during construction projects in the 1990s. It was later recovered and restored in time for the city's 350th anniversary celebration.
