Canton, Administrative division in Southeast Baltimore, United States
Canton is a neighborhood in Southeast Baltimore overlooking the outer harbor with waterfront parks, residential blocks, and commercial zones. The area spans different sections, each serving different purposes, together creating a mixed and functional urban space.
Irish merchant John O'Donnell founded the Canton plantation in 1785 and named it after a Chinese port while launching waterfront industrial development. The area quickly became a key shipbuilding and trading center.
Canton Square serves as a central gathering spot where neighbors gather for seasonal festivals and community events throughout the year. The plaza shapes the social life of the area and brings people together to share and celebrate.
The area offers excellent walkability with good access to restaurants, shops, and public transit throughout the neighborhood. Visitors should plan to spend time exploring the parks and waterfront areas by day and wear comfortable shoes for getting around.
A historic shipyard run by David Stodder built remarkable vessels including the USS Constellation launched in 1797. This shipbuilding operation made the area a recognized center of American naval construction.
