Catskill Mountain Railroad, Heritage railroad in Kingston, United States.
Catskill Mountain Railroad operates passenger trains on former New York Central tracks that run between Kingston and Stony Hollow. Travelers can ride in open-air cars or covered coaches as the trains move through forested areas in Ulster County.
The railroad began in 1868 as the Rondout & Oswego Railroad and played an important role during construction of the Ashokan Reservoir from 1908 to 1912. After that period, its role changed but the line continued to exist and eventually became a heritage operation.
The railroad preserves how people once moved through this region, keeping that travel history alive for visitors. Stepping aboard lets you experience firsthand the way passengers journeyed in earlier times.
Plan your visit ahead since train schedules vary by season throughout the year. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water, especially if you choose the open-air cars.
The operation is run by 69 volunteer shareholders who earn no income from the business. Every dollar of profit goes directly back into maintaining and preserving the historic trains.
