Following the destruction of the original 1862 structure by fire in 1922, the current Church of the Assumption was constructed in 1924 across from the Kansas Capitol.
The Church of the Assumption functions as the Mother Church of Topeka, maintaining regular Catholic services and religious ceremonies for the local community.
Located at 204 SW 8th Street, the church underwent major renovations including tuckpointing and roof replacement before reopening in October 2022.
The bell towers of the Church of the Assumption required specialized structural repairs to preserve their integrity within the historic district.
