Christy Woods

Christy Woods is a botanical garden on the Ball State University campus spanning 18 acres with mature forest and modern research facilities. The grounds feature native trees and four greenhouses where university researchers cultivate plants and maintain extensive collections for study and conservation.

The property was donated to Ball State University by the Ball Brothers in 1918, marking the beginning of its transformation into a botanical garden. Dr. O.B. Christy then developed the space by introducing native wildflowers and establishing research programs that continue today.

The gardens serve as a place where visitors encounter rare orchids and native plant species in their carefully maintained settings. People come here to observe botanical diversity and connect with the natural landscape that surrounds the university campus.

The garden is open to visitors and best explored on foot through walking paths that wind through the forest and past collections. Wear comfortable shoes and check weather conditions before visiting, as the grounds include natural woodland areas where paths may be uneven.

Most visitors focus on the greenhouses but miss that three-quarters of the property remains untouched forest serving as a natural classroom. This woodland section offers researchers and visitors a chance to observe forest ecosystems and their development without human intervention.
