Christy Woods spans across 18 acres, featuring mature forest with oak, hickory, ash, walnut, hackberry, and maple trees throughout the grounds.
The land became part of Ball State University through a donation from the Ball Brothers in 1918, after which Dr. O.B. Christy transplanted native wildflowers.
The Wheeler Orchid Collection and Species Bank maintains over 1,200 plants from 85 genera, including 500 species and 100 hybrid orchids.
Four greenhouses at Christy Woods support university research, with one dedicated to growing herbs for Ball State University Dining Services.
Three-quarters of the property contains untouched forest, providing a natural laboratory for environmental education and scientific research programs.
