Clinton Lake

Clinton Lake is a reservoir in Lawrence, Kansas, offering water and land areas with 50 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The lake features multiple parks with camping sites, boat rental options, fishing areas, and cabins available for overnight stays.

The Clinton Dam project was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1962, with construction beginning in 1972 and the lake reaching its full conservation pool by 1980. Building the dam provided flood protection for the region and created a dependable water source.

The Clinton Lake Museum, housed in a former milk shed from Bloomington, displays exhibits about communities that lived here before flooding created the lake. These items tell stories of daily life in the area before the water came.

The lake is accessible year-round and offers excellent fishing, boating, and camping opportunities at several organized locations around the water. Visitors should note that conditions vary by season and should check current access information before planning a trip.

The lake serves as a breeding ground for American white pelicans that arrive in seasonal waves, making it a notable spot for bird watchers. The presence of these waterbirds draws people who come specifically to observe their behavior and movement patterns throughout the year.
