Haskell-Baker Wetlands, National Natural Landmark wetlands in Lawrence, United States

Haskell-Baker Wetlands is a protected natural area near Lawrence featuring marshes, ponds, and waterways along the Wakarusa River. The landscape supports a wide range of plant and bird species in a diverse ecosystem.

The land began as agricultural property before being transferred to Baker University in 1968. This transfer marked the start of protection efforts that eventually led to National Natural Landmark status.

The site holds deep meaning for Native American communities due to its connection to the former Indian Industrial Training School. Visitors walking through can sense the historical weight of the land and its importance to many people today.

You can walk on trails throughout the area during daylight hours to explore the wetlands at your own pace. An on-site visitor center provides information and educational programs for those wanting to learn more.

Students at Haskell created a Medicine Wheel on the grounds as a reflection of local traditions. Added to this, artificial wetlands were built on the property to help offset environmental impacts elsewhere.
