Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, National Monument in Wilberforce, Greene County, US.
The Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument is a residence in Wilberforce, Greene County, acquired in 1907. The two-story brick house with its gabled roof, deep eaves, and T-shaped front porch across five bays remains the main structure on the grounds.
Charles Young was born into slavery in 1864 and became the first African American to graduate from West Point. He rose to the rank of colonel, breaking significant barriers in military service.
The name Buffalo Soldiers came from what Native Americans on the Plains called these African American cavalry troops. Today, visitors can learn how these soldiers shaped military history and what their service meant to the nation.
The site is open to visitors and offers guided tours and educational programs focused on Young and the Buffalo Soldiers. Plan time to explore the house and surrounding grounds to fully experience this historical location.
The residence, originally called Youngsholm, served as an Underground Railroad station before Young purchased it in 1907. This hidden history connects two pivotal chapters in African American resistance and the pursuit of freedom.
