Coghlan Castle, Stone castle in Rolette County, North Dakota, United States
Coghlan Castle is a stone building in Rolette County featuring Richardsonian Romanesque architecture with arched openings and detailed stonework throughout. The structure demonstrates careful masonry craftsmanship characteristic of early 1900s residential construction in rural North Dakota.
The building was completed around 1906 and served the Coghlan family as a residence for over four decades through the mid-20th century. It represents an important example of construction by affluent settlers establishing their homes in this rural region.
The National Register of Historic Places recognized this structure on July 16, 2008, marking it as the third property featured as property of the week.
The building is located in rural northern North Dakota and is quite remote from larger towns, making a personal vehicle necessary for visiting. Plan ahead and gather local directions or contact information before making the trip to this isolated location.
It is the only castle in North Dakota and represents an exceptionally rare form of fortified residential architecture on the Great Plains. This unusual structure stands out as a remarkable example of the ambitious vision held by wealthy landowners in the early 1900s.
