Congregation B'nai Israel, Former synagogue in Garfield, Pittsburgh, United States

Congregation B'nai Israel is a three-story stone building on North Negley Avenue designed with traditional synagogue features and detailed stonework throughout. Large windows punctuate multiple floors, creating a distinctive front elevation that faces the street.

Construction began in 1923 as the Jewish community moved eastward from Pittsburgh's central Hill District to newer neighborhoods. This relocation represented a major shift in where the city's Jewish population chose to establish itself.

The congregation was central to the lives of Jewish families who settled in this neighborhood and built their community here. It served as more than a place for prayer, functioning as a gathering space for social events and neighborhood connections.

The building at 327 North Negley Avenue sits in a residential neighborhood with street parking available nearby. Be aware that the property is private and currently undergoing conversion to residential use.

Custom stained glass windows were installed in the interior in 1964, crafted specifically for the space. These colored panels cast warm, filtered light throughout the main areas, adding an artistic dimension to the architecture.
