Devils Lake, Natural lake in North Dakota, US

Devils Lake is North Dakota's largest natural water body, stretching across two counties with depths reaching around 18 meters (59 feet). The shoreline consists of gently sloping banks with multiple public access areas for fishing and boating throughout the year.

The name came from a mistranslation of Dakota words that settlers interpreted as "Bad Spirit Lake" rather than preserving the original meaning of "pure source." This linguistic shift reflects early misunderstandings between settler communities and the people who lived here first.

The Spirit Lake Tribe has lived along these shores for generations, maintaining deep ties to the water and the surrounding lands. Their traditions and relationship with this place remain central to the region's identity today.

The lake is accessible year-round with several public boat launches positioned around the shoreline for fishing and boating. The flat terrain makes navigation straightforward, and multiple access points let you find a convenient spot to reach the water.

The lake basin collects roughly 86 percent of its water from local drainage, leading to significant water level changes that reshape the surrounding landscape. This closed-system pattern makes it an ever-shifting ecosystem that must adapt to varying conditions year after year.
