Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site

Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site, Military museum and Cold War facility in Cooperstown, North Dakota, US.

The Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site is a former rocket launch facility in rural North Dakota that formed part of the nation's nuclear weapons defense. The facility consists of an underground command center and a missile silo, both made accessible to visitors.

This facility was built in the 1960s as an operational missile position and oversaw a large area surrounding Grand Forks Air Force Base. The site was later converted into a history museum to commemorate this period of nuclear arms buildup.

The site preserves the memory of mutually assured destruction strategies that shaped millions of people during the Cold War era. The preserved control equipment and exhibits show how this logic influenced daily thinking and the worldview of an entire generation.

Visitors should book ahead since tours are limited and require a small group to safely descend underground. Weather in North Dakota can be extreme, so dress appropriately depending on the season.

Descending into the underground bunker offers a rare chance to understand the reality of nuclear preparedness firsthand, not just from books or films. The cramped chamber with its original equipment gives an intense sense of the tension of that era.
