Doughboy Park, Memorial park in Woodside, Queens, United States
Doughboy Park is a memorial space in Woodside, Queens, situated between Skillman and Woodside Avenues with walking paths, benches, and landscaped grounds. The site centers on a bronze statue of an American soldier set within the tree-lined layout.
The land was acquired in 1893 as a school play area and later served as a gathering place for soldiers departing for overseas service. Following World War I, the site was formally established as a soldier's memorial.
The bronze statue depicts an American infantryman created by sculptor Burt Johnson, a Queens native. The memorial honors local soldiers who served in foreign conflicts.
The grounds offer accessible pathways for walking, seating areas scattered throughout, and well-maintained trees providing shade. Entry is free and the park works well as a brief stop while exploring the neighborhood.
The grounds feature an accurately oriented compass rose set into the pavement bearing the names of ancient Greek wind deities known as the Anemoi. This classical reference adds an unexpected historical layer to the modern memorial space.
