Dix Mountain, Mountain summit in Essex County, New York, United States.

Dix Mountain is the sixth-highest peak in New York State, rising to 4,857 feet (1,480 meters). A narrow ridge extends from the summit southeast toward the subsidiary peak called Beckhorn.

State geologist Ebenezer Emmons named the mountain in 1837 after John Adams Dix, a figure who would later serve as governor of New York. This naming connected the peak to the political history of the region.

This peak ranks among the 46 Adirondack High Peaks, drawing hikers who seek to reach every summit in this mountain range. The collection represents a meaningful personal achievement for many visitors to the region.

Hikers can access the summit through multiple routes, with the Dix Trail from the Elk Lake parking area and the Round Pond Trail being the most common options. Weather conditions change rapidly at this elevation, so bring layers and check forecasts before heading out.

The western face features the Buttress Slide, a natural climbing route with distinctive geological formations that challenge climbers seeking an alternative to standard hiking paths. This feature draws rock climbers alongside traditional hikers to the mountain.
