Gothics, Mountain summit in Adirondack High Peaks, New York, US
Gothics is a summit in the Adirondack High Peaks standing at 4,736 feet (1,443 m), making it one of the ten tallest peaks in New York State. The mountain displays three distinct arched summits that form its recognizable silhouette.
The peak was first documented as climbed in October 1875 by surveyor Verplanck Colvin and two companions. This early ascent marked the start of the mountain's history as a destination for hikers.
The name reflects how early climbers saw the jagged summits and compared them to pointed Gothic architecture. Visitors still recognize these distinctive peaks from many angles in the region.
The main trail starts from John Brook Lodge and ascends steadily through the forest before opening onto rocky terrain near the summit. The climb is steep and takes most of a day, so hikers should start early and come prepared for changing weather.
From the summit, visitors can see roughly 30 surrounding peaks and both Upper and Lower Ausable Lakes in a single view. This panorama reveals how remote and elevated the position truly is within the mountain range.
